Yeah, selling it as I will be building a new one.
Thanks for the kudos -- it appears that a few others that have posted here have tweaked theirs even more -- but I am pretty happy with how this came out, as far as looking like the WorldCon piece finish-wise. The PERMA BLUE and BLACKEN it are GREAT for this effect. _________________ teckel@bellsouth.net |

Blacken It is another acid-solution that is used to darken the finish on different metals....similar effect to the PERMA BLUE -- another forum member suggested it, so I tried it out...it works well. Is it absolutely necessary? Not sure. i THINK it mskes metal a bit darker, but I didn't truly test it out fully...just took other builders word for it.
Here is link...you can also GOOGLE it and see some other reviews...

Looks great! I would love to hear a step-by-step...not on assembly ofcourse but on prep and paint would be very interesting. |

|
|
I followed on-line directions and polished all parts with brass brush with dremel and/or fine steel wool. Then wiped with Acetone, then took cotton balls and/or torn-up t-shirt and applied the Perma Blue (from Wal-Mart, about $5 a bottle) allowed to set for a minute or so, then rinsed with water. Then applied it again to darken (which it does a little bit) and rinsed. Then applied some of the BLACKEN IT solution the saem way -- and did this all 3 or 4 times until I was happy with the finish. The black parts are primed with black and then painted with gloss black which I then roughed up with steel wool here and there for weathered look.
When I was all done, I put some gun oil (also from WalMart) on a rag and wiped over all exposed metal surfaces (not the black parts) to protect it and give it a little sheen.
That's pretty much it and I believe the same technique many have used on this kit. I think it looks pretty dang close to weathered finish on actual prop. _________________ teckel@bellsouth.net |

Thanks!
I'm going to have to look into these supplies for finishing up my new World-Con when it arrives from Siderio. |

No worries. One can purchase Birchwood Casey products online.
HERE is the link to the "Perma Blue" page.

As posted earlier, you can get BLACKEN IT here -- but you may wana just try the Perma Blue first as I didn't really notice that much difference when I added the Blacken It solution.

Hey Doc, your build is really nice looking. It's very much what I'm seeing mine as when I finally get a decent metal kit.
Looking forward to what you have up your sleeve next! _________________ I don't have enough blasters! |

BeastMaster -- look above one or two posts -- I have listed info on Blacken It twice in this thread...but you really should just try PERMA BLE first as it is cheaper and you may not even need Blacken It. _________________ teckel@bellsouth.net |

yep I've been quizing dan on the perma blue
Though the blacken-it does give it that used, slightly rusty look to the metal which is a nice touch.
ah yes! I see the link now |
