Hello Everyone,
First time posting here. This was a recent commission I finished up on, and wanted to show it here. Had a long look around this place before joining and it looks really cool, a nice community.
The machine body itself is fiberglass from a silicone mold, and the various pieces are urethane resin from silicone molds. I've made this all from scratch, which includes all the little things, sanding, molding etc. Labor extensive.
The main large window will be an LCD monitor, and on the center of the eye mech where the LED goes, will be will be a mini cam. the electronics will be installed at the hands of the client who commissioned this piece from me though. The center in the eye mech now is just something I threw together to have something there when showing the completed machine.
The bellows were to be 4 cast pieces of vac-formed identical shapes put together like stacking cups as the original film was, but instead has a rubber bottom underneath the first top bellow. I like the design and concept better on the movie version myself.
Also, there will be various LEDS and lights put in, mainly the VU meter at the top of the main screen. The VU meter is the green to red sound light as used in steroes, like in the film. Currently there is just a piece of red filler, once again for picture aesthetic.
The 3 white squares up front are also filler pieces, they will be replaced by lighted LED bushbuttons.
I'm going to take a quick minute long movie of this later on to get a 360 feel, and show the arm raising etc. All movements are manual at this stage, it will be rigged to move in the hands of the client.
Thank you for looking,

Simply awesome. You say this was a recent commission - what was the time line that you worked with, because you built this from scratch and that is marvelous.
If ever you offer this FS - count me in!!!!!
Nice Work. |

Thank you for the kind words and response, I appreciate that highyl
I started buidling it at the beginning of April, somewhere around there. Labored over it for alot of hours and alot of days. I wasnt familir with the film that much before the build, so I had to soak in as much as I could in that time. Fast pace sort of studio work. Started off clueless for the most part but just pushed my way through the build.
Thanks again

The others are in my PB account under the "Voight-Kampff" heading. I dont want to overboard with pictures on my first times here and step on toes.

That is some great work there!
I can't watch the videos from my phone but will definitely check them out when I make it home.
I have to second the request to see it again when the electronics are installed.

Nice to see someone do something out of the ordinary.
Just over 20 years ago I was fortunate enough to visit Modern Props. I saw the ST2 Genesis lab computers(made from bowling tables), some Genesis lab equipment(made from swimming pool pumps), both types of ST2 Communicators(wrist comm made from a jogging calorie calculator and handheld as we know is made from a project box), ST2 tricorders, PKE meters(Iona), as well as other items. One prop that they originally referred to as the "artificial lung" was the VK machine. It was spiffy. The breathing lung part was made from the same plastic fans use to make classic tricorder and comm shells. Unfortunately it did not occur to me ask what the rest was made from. With all the cool stuff they had it was sensory overload.
One thing to consider is that the previously mentioned props(except the ST2 tricorder) were made from found items. When talking to the staff at MP they told me they liked to use shells from manufactured items to make the props look more realistic and apprear machine maufactured. I would not be at all surprised if the VK machine was made from the casing of a found item. Leaves me to wonder what what it could have been made from. |
