I *really* want to make a completely functional VK machine, with miniature monitors and cameras (of course, it won't actually monitor pupillary response ). But there are tons of sources for small servos, cameras, etc. Anyone done this and want to share a parts list? Engineering drawings?
The one in the movie looked like it worked, but I suspect all the video feeds were cabled under desk.

There was a guy on Ebay not long ago who was selling just the molds
to make the mahcine, no other parts, no nothin and he got $675.00US
for it. Hope you can unearth another, more practicle source. _________________ Formerly offworld66 |

You can see the beginnings of a project I have been putting together here: http://www.vkmachine.com/
It stalled out early last year as I was having trouble finding a good electronics person to work with. About a month and half ago I was contacted by a person in the industry who works for Stan Winston Studios that has interest in the project and wants to join forces.
There's still work that needs to be done to the back area of the main monitor for accuracy as well as a few other minor details. Then we'll see about molding it.
Looking at going the flat panel route with plastic convex lenses to give it the old CRT look. Real CRTs cannot fit because of their length.
Hopefully it will get done. Work is still busy for me and I know the other gent involved also is pretty busy right now. |

It looks like a lot of people started this project and became overwhelmed. Using flat panel displays, it looks to me like a relatively simple project if all you want is a mock-up. Berg and other prototyping outfits have lots of gearing, rails, etc. The design for the exterior case is a no-brainer-- the fact that someone paid $650 for molds kind of astounds me.
The complicated part is getting the robotics to work realistically in phase with the display.
Now that this PKD shooter is a wrap, I may begin to do some workups for components as time and money permit.
The robotics craze has made a lot of off-the-shelf components available.
