Just some friendly advice. I would consider keeping this more low key as the FLW Foundation is pretty strict about copyright enforcement. I've been to their offices here in Scottsdale and met with the gentleman in charge of enforcement. So far you would only need to worry about a C&D letter.
However, if Getty Images is an indicator - They are already setting precedent with sending a C&D/demand letter for penalties and their own assessments. I know this because one of my clients was stung and paid it out even though the image was gained from a "free" image site. They could have fought it, but it would have cost them more in legal fees. Basically it creates a new revenue stream for the license holder.
Be careful.

Close enough. I will have to make a cast to get what I need. I'm going to use them as corner pieces in some moulding work in the office. |

Well folks, back on the board after a little R&R...yes the famous tile; as I said earlier the manufacturer I contacted had to finish his work quota before the holiday and seemed very interested of producing the molds for the tiles (no word on the pricing).
He'll be back on the 5th of January and will contact me to see if I'm still on board with the project.
The tile will be 16''x 16'' and the weight will be approx. 0.5 grams. Should be easy to apply to a wall with either contact cement or a glue gun...stay tuned. |

Well folks, the saga continues; the firm I contacted earlier told me that they could not produce the tile ?! But that my chances rest with another company located in Vancouver with offices in Toronto.
Again, I'll fax the info and the drawing and the...well, you see the picture.
I'll contact them asap after that. I also e-mail Scott from Kropserkel and exposed my idea. He seems interested as well. My trick is to simply produce a tile the way you produce paper plates or egg-cartons; it can be molded in different colours (off-white, grey, tan/ocre).
With pulp cardboard products, the pulp is put in a mold and heated to create the tile. It's very light-weight, sturdy and can be very accurate in terms of details. VoilĂ , stay tuned for the next installment. |

Sounds perfect. Similar but better than what I was trying to do. I was going to try a paper mache' technique. I can't wait to see how it turns out.

I always thought that the ''egg-carton'' technique was the best one; sturdy, light-weight and the wear and tear on the mold is minimal.
They could churn the tiles by the hundreds easily, that is the more produced the smaller the cost per tiles. |

Funny, I've been writing to Scott Maple about a project for some time...he won't even write me back!
Anyway, I have a large fiber-glass tile that I'm willing to sell if anyone is interested. |

The final aspect of the tiles promises to be pretty close to the screen-used ones using this "egg-carton" technique... Well done Joberg, can't wait to see more !!! _________________ THE FUTURE IS A THING OF THE PAST |

If someone has a handle on 16x16 tiles, count me in.

great work joberg! everything about screams efficient. cheap, sturdy, LIGHT (how the hell do you ship a wall's worth of tiles without selling a kidney?) ... and if they are hollow molds i am guessing they would stack nicely into each other for easy shipping.
can't wait to see how this pans out. _________________ two legs bad, four legs good. |

Yep, I think that in terms of shipping it's a non-issue. Like egg-cartons they can be stacked high and still weigh nothing.
The previous manufacturer estimated that one tile had a total weight of 6 grams (the flat one was 5 1/2 grams)! I submitted the blue-print to another firm, but so far no news to report.
The waiting is killing me! |
