knock off or not ... your's looks better than Deckard's - sweet touch with the blinds and your lighting - and i know you took the time to get it right!

Thanks photek, i need to invest in a better camera soon though.

Put the second lid together using some ply, metal strips, pva glue
and about five coats of aluminium paint. Used some velcro to secure to case and not damage the original case.
Very happy with the end result as its another piece to the complete Deckard costume, now if i can only ID that pen.

Good repro Tim! As Neil said: love the shot in front of the blinds. (I would`ve bevelled the sides and the strips to get rid of sharp edges...my 2 cents Wink ).

The funny thing is that I think that if that is an added sheet on top, they were just trying to make a generic briefcase look like a Halliburton. Since yours already does, it seems kind of silly to add the extra piece. I still think though it is just a trick of the light too. Otherwise I think you have done a terrific job and am very envious of the whole display as well.

Thanks Andy,

Its possible the case was to have a more prominent role in the early days of filming and needed to be dressed accordingly.
A standard halliburton fits the environment but would be too straight forward for Ridleys eyes.
May have been done alongside the customised VK case,it certainly is very unique. Theres nothing standard about any part of Deckards costume when you think about it.
I will go with a portable vid phon/laptop idea as a possible intention.

I think the close up clearly shows a second lid attatched, there is clear
definition between it and the original case. I nearly pulled off the same effect using a flash as to the movies "super trooper"

It certainly looks like it in that picture, and it even looks like it might wrap up around the top edge. It even looks like it might be a vacuum formed piece, or even stamped tin. I looked at other shots of it and couldn't tell conclusively what was going on there. I am still not 100% convinced of it though. Here is a pic of the case from the opposite side that shows what looks like a Halliburton interior, as well as the Voight-Kampff manual that went up for auction with the Hero gun.

http://www.tyrell-corporation.pp.se/gallery/index.php?sfpg=SGlnaCBEZWZlbml0aW9uIENhcHR1cmVzLypCUkZDXyMwNDc0MjUucG5nKippbWFnZSoqMGE2Mjc3MDE3ZTk3MjEyNWRiZGQ3ZGRjZDJjODAxYzc

Unfortunately the angle does not show enough of the side to tell if there is a add on Cover piece or not. I am not buying that they "tried to make it look a little bit different than a regular Halliburton" theory, because it looks like too much work for something that is too subtle to even see. It makes no sense to me. It might make sense if the false front was possibly meant to be used in an action scene with squibs and bullets hits or other effects. I will have to look at some of the story boards and scripts to see if there is anything in there with something along those lines. Maybe he was supposed to use it in a fight scene and dent it over someones head? Very Happy

This film is famous for going to great detail for little or no result, the magazine covers are a great example of that.
Im sure they were made just in case there was a scene with Deckard reading a paper, detective style for example that never got shot.
Its not a stretch to apply the same thinking with the briefcase.

The fact that the VK manual is in the case makes me think even more that the case had other intentions than just sitting on his side table.
It could have been the original VK case and had the hole cut out, just like the used one, it didnt work out and they covered it up with a new piece.

I still think it was just a matter of dressing up an otherwise "normal" looking briefcase.

When you see the lip of the suitcase they used and the one from a Haliburton, you clearly see that it's a fuller quarter-round for the one on Deckard's desk...as Tim said, the amount of details and layers that film contains is beyond belief!! From mags cover, to Vid-Phones, books, knick-knacks, bottles, etc. We might never uncover every little pieces of this puzzle called Blade Runner. How many cases in the film? My last count is 3: the one in the apt., the one at Tyrell with the VK and the one when he exit the car. Screen time: a few seconds and each of them somewhat transformed, dressed-up to make them special enough and to respect the "look" of that 2019 world.

Sorry, Still not really making sense logically. The other changes are details specifically made to make the film more futuristic, or at least just alien enough, not a change that is almost a complete identical remake added on that could only in essence add to the fake quality of the case potentially. It doesn't jive with the rest of the changes made in the film to the found objects. It is a literal redundancy. This is done in film making a lot though to hide something like effects or previous damage. I have a feeling the case may have originaly been rigged up for the Leon interview scene with Holden, and was to be shot instead of the thermos, but didn't work to Ridley's satisfaction. This makes much more sense to me

Possible hint here from the July 24, 1980 script...

Quote:
Leon looks shocked, surprised. But the needles in
the computer barely move. Holden goes for the inside
of his coat. But big Leon is faster. His LASER BURNS
a hole the size of a nickel through Holden's stomach.
Unlike a bullet, a laser causes no impact. It goes
through Holden's spine and comes out his back, clean
as a whistle. Like a rag doll he falls back off the
bench from the waist up. By the time he hits the
floor, big slow Leon is already walking away. But he
stops, turns and with a little smile of satisfaction,
FIRES at the machine on the table.

There's a flash and a puff of smoke. The Voight-Kampff
is hit dead center, crippled but not destroyed; as
Leon walks out of the room, one of its lights begins
to blink, faint but steady.

EXT. DESERT - NIGHT

The case may have been thought of as part of the VK at one point (as stated by Tim above). Once it was made it would easily have been just lying around to be used for set decoration, even after it was not used for it's intended purpose.

The idea that it was just supposed to be a subtle detail on a film that was on a tight budget, and then made to look almost exactly like the case as it already is, makes little to no sense to me unless the false front had already been made for another purpose. It is just way too subtle. I could buy that theory maybe if some wires or tech looking stuff was added on to it as well. The papers and magazines were able to be done cheaply and meant to look very different to 1980's magazines. "if it doesn't jive, you must continue to strive" Wink

Changed down to a 3mm ply and rounded off the edges a little more, although visually its only a slight change, I think its more authentic.

Turns out its not o knock off afterall, found this while fixing the new lid.

Very cool. I was going to say that it looked like a 60's, James Bond era edition of the briefcase. Great to see it is authentic.

Thanks guys,
Your right about the Q Branch feel of the case Andy. Im gunna take it one step further and put a hinge on the second lid and dress it up to look like a portable vid phon. Giving it a BR tech look will be a challenge though.
I can use my purchased Whitefall vid phon front cover file to make up most of the display, just cut it up and change the sizes. Something like this...

You could easily replace the vid phon theme with anything even Mr Bond.
A good picture of Harry Bryant instead of Racheal would give the case an official police phon look, just needs a photoshop crosshair.

Went with a less is more approach to the look of the fantasy in built vid phon. Used a similar textured mat to the deleted scenes compendium
lining as the basis and just $8 in prints to pull it off.

Not wanting to damage the briefcase, i had to use double sided tape and velcro to hold it all together. In the future i might get the images printed on clear plastic film,
similar to the light boxes and place them on top of the thin lighting sheets and finish with some neon wire trim with an activator switch that would turn it off and on by
opening and closing the second lid.

This would mean drilling into the case and i dont want to do that at the minute.
