Right, here goes.
This movie came out in '68 (Quite a while before i was born, lol) so i've not seen it, until now.
Hopefully i'll watch it in the next couple of days.
I know there are a few fans here so i thought i'd get your views on whether it's worth a watch?
I think i already know the answer but thought i'd throw it out there anyway
Oh, and some pictures to get me in the mood would be great Karl |

....I saw this movie when it came out with my brand new wife in San Francisco.....it was the sixties and as I recall we were dressed appropriately (read bell bottoms) and had smoked appropriately (read weed) and the movie was a borderline religious experience (read high as a proverbial kite)....
...have seen this movie at least twenty times since (read straight) and never tire of it....
...this movie makes me very glad that I have always been a "David" and not a "Dave"......smiling...... _________________ ...the future is not all it's cracked up to be... |

lol. Love it.
I'm gonna give this a watch either way i think.
I found out the other day that my grandparents went to see it when it first came out, they died when i was around 7 so i think it'll make me happier to know that it's something special, if you get what i mean.
Also, my dad went to see it when it came out aswell, and my dad isn't even a sci-fi fan, lol. |

Well that's a little like going to TheForce.net, and saying "Star Wars, is it worth a watch?"
Short answer... yes.
Don't worry about films being mede before your time... I was 5 years old when 2001 came out, I didn't see it until years later anyway.
"Forbidden Planet", "Citizen Kane", "Dr. Strangelove", lots of good movies were made before you were born.
But anyway, 2001... a deep, complex film. Personally I think it is a comedy! Not a laugh out loud comedy, but there IS a sort of deadpan absurdity to it all. Heywood Floyd riding to the Moon all by himself on those big spaceships.
In any case, 2001 features some of the most influential spacecraft and costume designs of any science fiction film. Watch it just for the visuals!

Don't worry about that. I think all my favourite movies are older than me, lol. Sometimes i feel like i should have been born sooner.
Great pics Karl.
The thing that really got me into watching this was a topic on the RPF about a replica space suit being made, and the pictures you posted in the ALIEN enviromental suit topic aswell (My username on the RPF is DivineHeresy) |

...spot on with the "humor"....the movie generated laughter when it came out....."anti gravity toilet" "bush baby for my birthday" "Dave...." notwithstanding...
sadly the "humor" coming from Kubrick (read dark) does not get talked about much.....an inspired film that transcends genre...big time..... _________________ ...the future is not all it's cracked up to be... |

I keep looking at that last picture and thinking "How cool would it be to own a suit like that?"
It's always nice to have a bit of comedy in movies. |

DEFINITELY worth a look, if for nothing else but to marvel at how well the special effects were done (amazing for '68 ).
But don't go in with your hopes too high; that's how I did/do it. For me, about 20 minutes of the film's climax could have been completely removed & it wouldn't have affected the story in the least.
All I'll say is "eyeball".
But it's a classic to be sure. _________________

good topic. saw it as a kid cuz dad wanted to watch it ... again and again. he wasn't even a 'smoker' but he loved space and classical music.
initially, i had no idea what to think of it, but can say without a doubt, my taste in music was shaped largely by this film. as it turns out Kubrick is responsible for my appreciation of classical music overall (to include Clockwork Orange and Barry Lyndon).
its canon for the sci-fi genre and whether you appreciate the kick-ass models and microphotography or just the concept (which is still often hard for me to fully grasp - despite dozens of viewings), it has indeed earned its honor as one of the greatest all-time sci-fi films.
2009 and still, nothing comes close (with of course, one exception) ... watch it! _________________ two legs bad, four legs good. |

I LOVE this movie. Saw it originally in college in SF and was also HIGH AS HELL I was so taken with the level of reality they went to for recreating zero G environments.
If you are watching it for the first time I suggest darkness and mind altering substances of your choice. religious experience is right. _________________ I just do eyes. |

Yep, this movie is on my top list as well. Like the movie this site is dedicated to, it is not an action movie with an obvious narrative plot. It is an immersive experience that can be thought provoking long after you have watched it.
You have to go into it with patience and not expecting much. If you can go into it with the right mindset, you won't need mind altering substances to "Trip" with it.

I have watched this film a few times in theaters, and I find it just RIVETING. Not in the least boring or tedious. Just every scene is captivating.
But that's in a theater. You have nothing else to do but sit there and watch it.
Might be more difficult to focus on home video. Try to give it a chance. Yes the apes go on forever. But try to pay attention, it's important.
Going to the Moon, voiceprint identification, Strauss waltzes, interminable shots of people walking on walls. Yes I know. But it's a movie about technology and its alienating effect on people. Nobody talks like a "real" person, because these are Astronauts, dammit. A future breed. Especially Dave and Frank. Those guys are all business.
"A blue woman's cashmere sweater has been found..."
"I must say, you guys have really come up with something."
"Just a moment. Just a moment."
"Well that would pretty much wrap it up, as far as HAL was concerned."
"I think you should sit down, take a stress pill and think things over."
The spacesuits of 2001 have influenced film design up to this day.
2001 a space odyssey (1968)
War In Space (Japanese, 1977)
Titan Find (aka Creature)
Mission to Mars
Star Trek Enterprise
Battlestar Galactica

The spaceships of 2001 were similarly influential. Kubrick photographed HUGE miniatures with the camera going by on a dolly track, but MANUALLY incremented (no computers in those days! that would come later with STAR WARS).
Very long exposures to hold depth of field. Very large models - the Discovery was FIFTY feet long!
Later of course camera moves could be automated with computers. And then CG came along and destroyed the art of miniatures altogether.
Still for a few years, 2001 flavored everything.
2001
Space: 1999
STAR WARS
ALIEN
SUNSHINE (2008)

I made a poster of the instructions on using a zero gravity toilet ages ago from the making of book, both of which i cannot find, interesting reading if you can find it,
personally, a space nappy would suit me. _________________ Formerly offworld66 |

Great movie, great special effects, a little long here and there...but that's Kubrick for you (remember when Ridley wanted the rushes from the Shining for the ''cute end of BR and received miles of it from Stanley)?
The beginning sums it up: the monkeys in charge of technology! |

I couldn't agree more. I used to love movies with CG in them but miniatures are far more detailed and i just love 'em |

It's cool seeing how many other movies have been influenced by this one.
The video phone is just like the VID-PHON, even showing the charge at the end.
Also, i thought that i could see the escape pod from A New Hope aswell |
